Vivian Gahtan, MD

Dear Members and Colleagues:

Vivian Gahtan, MD, EVS President
Vivian Gahtan, MD
2011-2012 President
I look forward to seeing you at the Eastern Vascular Societyís 26th Annual Meeting that will be held at the Omni William Penn Hotel in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, September 13-15, 2012.

Our Program Committee, under the leadership of Dr. Rabih Chaer, put together an excellent program covering the broad spectrum of vascular and endovascular surgery, with regional, national and international speakers. In redesigning the program, we increased the number of scientific presentations. To appeal to the busy clinical vascular surgeon, expert lectures or a short debate to review technical tips and decision making for common problems in vascular surgery were added to each scientific session. As of this year, the meeting has also been structured to allow for accrual of self assessment CME credits.

We are pleased to offer a half day postgraduate course on Varicose Vein Management with live demonstrations, co-directed by Dr. Ellen Dillavou and Dr. Steven Elias.

Our Young Surgeonís Committee, co-chaired by Drs. Michael Costanza and Mark Davies, is again conducting Mock Oral Examinations for our senior vascular residents, vascular fellows and new members who await the certifying examination. This Committee is also introducing a Young Surgeons Program this year with topics devoted to career choice and development.

Our Issues Program, chaired by Dr. Neal Cayne, will address vascular surgery workforce needs and issues related to the 5-year vascular residency training paradigm.

Our Honorary Lecturer this year is Dr. Julie Freischlag, who will speak to us on Personal Comparative Effectiveness.

The ad hoc Committee on Diversity and Womenís issues will have a breakfast session addressing achieving diversity within an organization.

Immediately after the Meeting adjourns, a Vascular Lab Course focusing on preparation for the RPVI examination will occur. This course will be co-directed by Drs. Steven Leers, Michael Singh and Rabih Chaer.

Our Social Programs include both a Welcome Reception and Presidential Cocktail Reception on Thursday and Friday evenings.

We also must acknowledge our industrial partners for their generous support of our meeting.

The full scope of the program provides a stimulating and informative meeting.

Vivian Gahtan, MD
President
