2016

Dear EVS Members & Friends:

I look forward to seeing all of you at the 30th Annual Meeting of the Eastern Vascular Society that will be held at The Westin Philadelphia in Philadelphia, PA, September 15-17, 2016. This meeting promises to be a rewarding and stimulating educational and social experience.

The Program Committee, under the leadership of Dr. Michael J. Costanza of SUNY Upstate Medical University, has assembled an excellent program covering a wide range of topics for vascular and endovascular surgery that will be presented by a diverse panel of distinguished speakers, will span over 5 scientific sessions, and include 41 original presentations. This year’s program will also include video presentations on complex procedures, tips & tricks. We have also added a new e-poster competition. The annual meeting has been structured to allow for accrual of self-assessment CME credits again this year.

The Postgraduate Course will focus on 4 themes; 1) “Vascular Innovation 2020: The Impact of New Devices and Techniques” moderated by Dr. Linda M. Harris & Dr. Patrick A. Stone, 2) “Top 5 Pitfalls to Avoid” moderated by Dr. Alan M. Dietzek & Dr. Kathleen J. Ozsvath, 3) EVS Debate: “Uncomplicated Type B Aortic Dissections” moderated by Dr. Robert Rhee, and 4) EVS Roundtable: “Working with Industry – Is It Possible To Do This In An Unbiased Way?” moderated by Dr. Daniel G. Clair.

The Diversity Panel will be held on the “Challenges in the Future of Vascular Surgery” and I am honored to be a part of its esteemed faculty including Dr. Michael T. Watkins of Massachusetts General Hospital, Dr. James H. Black, III of Johns Hopkins, Dr. Michel S. Makaroun of UPMC Presbyterian, Dr. Kambhampaty Krishnasastry of Northshore University Hospital, and Dr. Vivian Gahtan of SUNY Upstate Medical University.

The Issues Panel will focus discussions on “Regionalization of Complex Vascular Care: Rationale and Implications”, will be moderated by Dr. Matthew J. Dougherty of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, and faculty will include Dr. R Clement Darling III, Dr. Keith D Calligaro, Dr. Linda Harris, and Dr. Matthew Sideman.

The Young Surgeon’s Program moderated by Dr. Bao-Ngoc Nguyen & Dr. Grace J. Wang will have presentations and discussions tailored to meet our young surgeons’ needs. Topics will focus on finding the right job, mentorship, the business of vascular surgery and negotiating contracts, the ins and outs of academic vs. private practice, and research. Faculty includes Dr. Linda Harris, Dr. Anton Sidway, Dr. Joshua A. Eisenberg, Dr. Mark A. Adelman, Dr. Mark F. Conrad, Dr. Ralph P. Ierardi, Dr. Joseph V. Lombardi, and Dr. Frank W. LoGerfo.

One of the highlights of the EVS annual meeting is the Honorary Lecture. I am delighted to announce that the EVS 2016 Honorary lecture will be given by Dr. Carlo Dall’Olmo of the Michigan Vascular Center, who will talk about Change and the Practice of Vascular Surgery: A Never Ending Learning Curve.

The EVS program has been restructured this year to include a Residency/Fellowship Fair and a Jobs Fair in addition to the Mock Orals that will be held on Saturday September 17, 2016. The Residency/Fellowship Fair will provide the opportunity to network with program directors, faculty and current trainees and the Jobs Fair will provide an opportunity for fellows, residents, and students to meet with potential employers. Strong mentorship is critical for medical students, residents, fellows, and young vascular surgeons and the EVS would like to lead the way with a strong mentorship program. I invite you to 'Become a Mentor' to our Society’s Future Vascular Leaders and develop meaningful relationships with students, residents, fellows, and young vascular surgeons.

Our Social Programs include a Welcome Reception on Thursday evening and the Presidential Cocktail Reception on Friday evening that will provide a mentoring opportunity with the EVS Executive Council, Surgeons in Training and New Members.

I am honored and privileged to have the opportunity to work with the Executive Council and the Committees over the past 10 months. We much appreciate our industry partners for their continued support of our Annual Meeting. I look forward to welcoming you all to The Westin Philadelphia this September.

Sincerely,

Manish Mehta MD, MPH
President
